Depression in any form is important to treat because as you may know, it can be physically debilitating and it can worsen. Sometimes we confuse sadness or sorrow for depression, when these are actually healthy responses to upsetting situations. It is when we do not bounce back after tending to our feelings and emotions that we may want to receive some help. Sometimes depression affects our sense of self worth because we come to identify with the unsettling feelings. Therapy helps to assess the severity of the depression and provide a framework for treatment, eventually honoring and sorting through the feelings, and eventually restoring ourselves back to a healthy emotional balance.
